Report claims Samsung pays $1bn to Apple in five-cent coins, delivering payment via 30-truck fleet
perBlog alleges that Samsung’s fleet of trucks carrying 20 billion five-cent coins turned up outside Apple HQ, calling CEO Tim Cook to inform him that payment had arrived.
The site even quoted Chairman of Samsung Electronics Lee Kun-hee as saying his company would not back down to a group of “geeks with style” and that he would retaliate in the same ‘dirty’ manner in which Apple has dealt with the dispute:
“You can use your coins to buy refreshments at the little machine for life or melt the coins to make computers, that’s not my problem, I already paid them and fulfilled the law.”
On further inspection, the report was found to have been sourced from a meme posted on 9Gag.com, rendering the news a hoax.
Given that Samsung’s settlement fee has not been made officially payable to date, the PaperBlog post held little credibility in the industry following its publication.
Websites, such as The Guardian labelled the story “proof that some people will believe anything“.
PaperBlog has since responded to the backlash, commenting on its story, “You didn’t think this could be real right? but hey! you loved it
